Balancing Machines for Jet Engines

For peak performance, today's jet engines require multiple balancing procedures in the manufacturing process as well as during overhaul. To assure the lowest vibration levels and the highest efficiency sound, reliable techniques must be applied to the individual blades, the disk and the final turbine assembly.

Our computerized moment weighing scales and BLADISNet Software can optimize blade distribution by determining the relative or absolute moment of each blade and selecting the best location within the set. Our WM scales greatly reduce the initial unbalance in the assembly and streamline the balancing procedure.

Schenck offers a complete line of vertical and horizontal balancing machines specifically for low-speed balancing of jet engine modules and assemblies. All systems are designed to ARP 4050 and 4048 standards, and can be equipped with complete enclosures to eliminate windage and ensure the safety of personnel.

Low-pressure modules (turbine & compressor), high-pressure modules (turbine, compressor and fan), and intermediate modules if appropriate, can be balanced on a vertical machine prior to assembly. Both static and dynamic models are available for nearly any rotor weight.

A complete range of horizontal machines is also available for balancing subassemblies. Units can be equipped with end-drive, belt-drive, or end-and belt-drive depending on the rotor's horsepower requirements and the recommendation of the manufacturer.

Complete quality control packages are also available for balancing machine performance testing, tooling audit and control, and rotor quality monitoring. All packages are designed in compliance with SAE/ARP recommended practices with all proving rotors traceable to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

Schenck's total support program goes beyond balancing to provide equipment and technical services for balancing program certification, rotor assembly tooling and handling fixtures (1.2MB Adobe.pdf file), detailed process documentation and engine specific training programs. Schenck’s total support program ensures a timely and efficient launch for every engine overhaul program.
